On Portaging

One of the things that keeps me away from the IV to IV+ runs is the idea that many paddlers have that walking a rapid is not acceptable for some reason. When I've suggested that I'm thinking about walking a rapid on a run that is pushing my ability, I've nearly always gotten static for it. Everyone says that it takes too long to portage and that you're better off running the rapid. Sometimes they say that the portage is as dangerous as the rapid (which might be true). Sometimes they say that you're a coward for walking it.

Now my opinions are well known on the third view. Anyone who would call anyone else a coward on the river doesn't deserve any respect. Paddling whitewater isn't the sport for you and you need to quit. You are a danger to yourself and to the people who paddle with you.

For anyone who says it takes too long to portage, I say that rescuing a swimmer, gathering the yard sale, and draining the boat takes just as long. I also say that this really isn't even a valid argument, because time isn't a consideration where safety is concerned. If you have to portage fifteen rapids, which really would take all day, then you probably shouldn't be on the river. But there's nothing wrong with portaging if a rapid or two look too big, complex, or dangerous for you.

Don't paddle with people who discourage you from walking a rapid that you have doubts about. The bottom line is that paddling whitewater is supposed to be fun. If you aren't having fun due to fear, then don't hesitate to portage.
