Usually I only get one or two chances in a year to run the Cartecay all the way from Lower Cartecay Road to the Department of Natural Resources takeout. Due to drought, it took over a year for me to get a chance and when it came I jumped on it.

Cartecay River: Lower Cartecay Road to the DNR Takeout
Georgia
April 5, 2008

The new stairs down to the launch in a tributary creek.
The new steps down to the launch on a small tributary.

The small tributary at the put-in still had some flow from the rains.

The same stream shows the ledge and slide topography of the underlying rock layers at the Cartecay. The same geology can be seen on a larger scale on the river, and an even larger scale still on tributary Clear Creek a few miles further downstream.

Brian Swafford and Betsy Westerfield at the put-in. The grass is green from Spring rains, a nice change from last year.

Another photo of Brian and Betsy.

Steve Smyth loves to squirt in his EZ.

Betsy surfing yet again. It's her favorite spot.

Above: Augie Westerfield runs the left to right line at Stegall Mill Falls on the Cartecay.

I don't know who the people in the photo are but it gives a good sense of scale. The rapid: Mr. Twister.

The group takes a break below Mr. Twister.

For some reason I like getting a picture of the boats lined up at some point during the day. It's like a still-life but one that implies action.

Steve peeling out below Mr. Twister.

Mister Twister in the mist(er).

Above: Brian Swafford gets spun around 180 degrees by the nasty second hole at Clear Creek Falls on the Cartecay. Sorry about the nausea inducing camera work, the eddy was a bit surgy.

Betsy survives Clear Creek Falls.
